Our Story
Our History
St. Francis hospital Mutolere is a 200+ bed hospital located in Bufumbira East, Kisoro district in south western Uganda. It was established in 1957 by the Franciscan sisters of Breda as a church based voluntary health facility. It is currently operating under the jurisdiction of the Kabale Catholic Diocese after the congregation handed it over to the diocese in 1994. The hospital operates as a general hospital providing the entire scope of health care delivery under the Uganda minimum health care package of the ministry of health. It provides preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care services. it also provides specialist services in general surgery and obstetrics/gynecology. The hospital also runs a health training school specializing in the training of nurses and midwives. The hospital began humbly as a small dispensary in 1957. During that time, the missionaries were concerned with provision of health care to people in an area that was almost excluded from the rest of the country. Kisoro was a remote area of Uganda, hard to access with non-existent social infrastructure. Today, the hospital has grown into one of the biggest health care institutions in the south western region of Uganda. It is also a referral hospital for many people from eastern Congo and Rwanda given its proximity to the border. Located just 4kms from the centre of Kisoro town, the hospital also serves an increasing urban population in a town that is known to be a hub for tourists visiting Mgahinga and Bwindi national parks which are home to the rare mountain golliras. Within the same township is located Kisoro hospital, a government owned and managed health facility that operates as the district hospital. The relationship between the two hospitals is that of complementarity and cooperation rather than competition. Like any government health facility, Kisoro hospital is also severely resource constrained. From a small health facility in the 50s, the hospital has grown into a complex organization with 191 employees. This growth over the years has made the hospital to require robust management systems and adequate resources. As a response the hospital has been developing five-year strategic plans to guide institutional growth in the next five years
